![]() Rise added a ton more mechanical depth to stealth, combat, and traversal, had a faction to interact with and get side quests from, better gear and skill upgrades, and more puzzles, more elaborate and difficult puzzles as well. There was barely a stealth mechanic aside from “kill them before you’re seen” and the shooting galleries got repetitive and stale. I don’t think I ever used the “survivor vision” to do them. It was very linear and only had 8 tiny tombs that had no real hazards, and those were optional. The theme of TR games is uncovering ancient mysteries, but the core GAMEPLAY is exploration, puzzles, and combat, and TR2013 only had much of the latter. If you think 2013 had enough puzzles to justify calling it a Tomb Raider game, then we definitely disagree. And sure, Rise had that, but I felt like the flow of information to the player wasn't really all that smooth, it was more like "here's an old story, now you know the bad guy's motivation" in the first 30 minutes of the game. I'm told Shadow is great though, I'll have to play it when I get a new console.ĮDIT: and I'd say a core characteristic of Tomb Raider is the unraveling of ancient mysteries. I'm sure Rise was similar but I just never felt compelled to play it. TR 2013 had puzzles, like all those times you had to play with the wind, or find the way to that pilot, or all the tombs, or the whole return to the endurance, etc., etc. Although, to be fair, I did not finish the game. I loved the exploration and puzzles in every other Tomb Raider game, but is there really much of it in Rise? It started off strong with Syria where I thought "oh they're really going for the puzzles in this one" and then it was just like 2013 but without the intriguing story. I didn't care what happened in Rise, I felt it was just "let's find a way to put Lara in the same situation as the last game and we'll see how we get to the rest of the story" it felt like it was trying to be as mysterious as 2013 with its story but it never really clicked with me.
